Toby Keith Releases: “Peso in My Pocket”
Last we heard from our old friend Toby Keith he had written and released the moving, Clint Eastwood inspired single, Don't Let the Old Man In which Eastwood promptly featured in his film The Mule. The beautifully poignant piece was Toby at his absolute singing, songwriting best - and it left us wanting more.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, Toby was enjoying a stay at his house in Cabo San Lucas. When most of his friends high-tailed it back to the States, concerned with closing borders, Toby, a member in good standing of both Songwriting Hall of Fames ( New York and Nashville), decided Mexico was as good a place as any to write for a new album.
The result is Peso In My Pocket Toby’s first new album in 5 years, and well worth the wait.
Aside from the 5 songs of his own, Toby reached out to among others, Keb Mo, Maren Morris, The Warren Brothers and Sammy Hagar for input, including a tribute to the great John Prine with Take a Look at My Heart from Prine’s 1991 album The Missing Years.
Noting that radio all but ignored his previous offering, 35 MPH Town, an album Keith was quite happy with, the mighty Oklahoman was perfectly content to let Country radio ride and take his music directly to his massive fan base. But the first single from the album, Old School was the number one most added single in both Mediabase and Billboard; demonstrating that true artists don’t chase trends, they start them.
Meanwhile back in Oklahoma, the Toby Keith and Friends Golf Classic raised $1.427 million dollars - the second-highest total in the event’s 17 year history. All in, the gathering has raised a total of over $15 million for OK Kids Korral, the cost-free home for families of children being treated at Oklahoma City area hospitals.
And that is the Toby we know and love.
